An array of animal arenas will provide hours of entertainment with agility demonstrations, grooming advice, activity zones, educational talks from leading professionals in the pet world and opportunities to meet heroic 4-legged friends. As well as all of this, famous faces from TV will be gracing the show to share their passion for pets.

Vet Challenge 2012

Two teams from the Willows Veterinary Group recently took part in a gruelling triathlon and raised a staggering £3275.47 for three very worthwhile causes – Hounds for Heroes, The Pet Blood Bank and SPANA, a charity that helps working animals in some of the poorest countries on the planet.

The teams comprising farm, equine and small animal vets competed against 24 other teams of vets from across the UK in The Vet Challenge 2012, an annual event held at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester and finished in second and third place.

The course comprised a 20km trail run, 30km cycle ride and 7km of kayaking and if that wasn’t enough the organisers had also introduced orienteering and a series of problem solving tests along the route to ensure that both body and brain were tested to their maximum.

"I have never done anything as hard in my life " says Veterinary Surgeon John Dawson "The course was very demanding and it was only by working as a team that we managed to get through the challenges without incurring any penalties”.

DOG FUN DAY - WINSFORD SEPTEMBER 30th 2012
The first Dog Fun Day organised by The Friends of Weaver Parkway was a huge success. The rain kept away and lots of dog owners and their pets turned up for a really enjoyable event. The dog show organised and run by Winsford Veterinary Surgery was extremely popular as was the fastest recall and the have a go agility areas. Clients of J and J Greenwood Dog Training performed a display to illustrate the benefits of training. Thanks must go to the rangers and the friends of Weaver Parkway who put in a lot of time organising and marshalling the event. Thanks also to the following sponsors: McDonalds, Fords of Winsford, Amcol, Crown Carveries and Cheshire West and Cheshire Council.

CAT RETURNS AFTER 7 MONTHS AWAY

One of our Veterinary Surgeons Ian Hopkins has lost count of the number of times over his 19 years as a vet that he has advised cat owners to have their cat microchipped but is pleased that he took his own advice when it came to his own pets.

One of Ian’s two cats, Jemima, an 8 year old Birman cross went missing on a snowy day on 4th February from the family home in Middlewich. Despite all the family members searching, posters being put up, an internet campaign and neighbours alerted there was no sign of Jemima. As the days and weeks passed with no word the family gave up hope of ever seeing Jemima again fearing that she had been stolen or met a tragic end.

Seven months later on 4th September Mrs Hughes walked into Willows Veterinary Hospital in Northwich with a stray cat that had been wandering around Barnton for a few weeks. Mrs Hughes had gradually befriended the cat and gained her confidence until she was able to pick her up and take her to the vets.

"When she was brought in we thought we recongnised her as Jemima” said Veterinary ReceptionistDebbie Taylor "and a quick scan and check on the national database confirmed our suspicions”.

"We couldn’t believe it when we got the call” said Ian, " We were all delighted to have her back except for our dog Cookie who is now back to being beaten up by two cats again!”

Jemima doesn’t seem any worse for her adventures and has settled back into family life.

"I now have first hand experience to explain to clients why microchipping is so important " said Ian " And it’s nice to know that some missing pet stories do have happy endings”.

Vet on the Radio
Tom McGowan from Acorn Veterinary Centre was the guest on the Vet Surgery on 109.5 City Talk on Tuesday 12th June. Listners rang or texted a wide variety of questions covering a wide variety of problems including a cat that was drooling and sneezing, Microchipping, a 10 year old Westie with a skin problem, an egg bound Boa Constrictor and a dog who had swallowed his owner's wallet. Commenting on Tom's accent one listener did think that Elvis was alive and well and had become a vet !!
CHARITY DONATION
Each year we have our staff Christmas Party and as well as letting our hair down (If only I had hair to let down !!!) we also use the event to raise money for charity. Each surgery nominates a charity and we draw the recipients out of a hat. The lucky recipients this time around were The Mr Cedric Greyhound Trust chosen by The Firs Surgery in Kelsall and Claire House Hospice chosen by our Chester Farm Office, Deva Vets. Each charity received a cheque for £500. Pictured is Mandy from the Mr Cedric Trust receiving her cheque.
CHESHIRE FM
It is with great sadness that we report the demise of Cheshire FM. For the last 12 months we have sat in the Vet on the Radio spot on the first Wednesday of every month on the station and know from feedback that many of our clients enjoyed listening to the show. It was a great way to interract with local pet owners and answer their questions on pet health and behaviour. The radio station was a real 'local' station which focussed on the communities in Mid-Cheshire and will be sadly missed. We were proud to have been a part of their programming and would like to thank 'Big Al' for making the on-air chats so enjoyable.
